From 1982 to now, we have only missed three years of calving recips. What can we say? Our home program of raising about 200 ET calves a year stays full. We also have new ideas.

Our son-in-law and daughter, Dan and Lacy Hanson, in Lusk, Wyoming, introduced a new program that fits Wagyu breeders well but not limited to that breed alone.

They will breed Angus heifers in June and sell the pregnant recips in the fall. The benefits are apparent:

-Calve when the weather is warm so the lightweight calves which have trouble with temperature regulation are good.

-Smaller teat size so the little mouths can get ahold.

-A little less milk so the calf is less prone to diarrhea and over-eating disease, and the cow is less prone to mastitis.

Mothers in this program are less-experienced so may require some coaching.
